Background Information
The ICOC (Indonesia Council Open Conference) is a multi-disciplinary
conference which provides a forum for the presentation of new and
innovative work on Indonesia with particular emphasis on encouraging
engagement between newer Indonesianists and established scholars. It
attracts participants from all over Australia and many other parts of the
world.
The Seventh ICOC will be held at the University of Tasmania, 11 – 12 July
2013. Preceding the conference proper a Workshop for Honours and
graduate/postgraduate students will be held in the morning session on 11
July.
There is no registration fee for the conference.
Call for Papers and Panels
The Indonesia Council now invites proposals for papers and panels. Papers
will be presented in plenary and concurrent panel sessions of three papers
with a discussant. Proposals for papers should include a title and an
abstract of 150 words as well as a bionote of 100 words. Proposals for
panels should include either a suggested panel title only or the titles and
abstracts of three papers of 20 minutes duration each. Proposals for panels
or a series of several panels are strongly encouraged.
The submission date for panel and paper proposals is Friday 12 April 2013.

How to Register
To register for the conference please send an email with your name,
institutional affiliation and email address to icoc2013@gmail.com by
Friday 14 June 2013. Please indicate if you would also like to register for
the Postgraduate (& Honours) Workshop to be held in the morning session of
11 July.
Please indicate if you DO NOT want your name, institution and email address
published in the conference program.
Venue
Both the conference and workshop will be held in and around the Hunter
Street premises of the University of Tasmania, on Hobart's beautiful
waterfront, 5 minutes walking distance from the CBD, Salamanca Place,
Maritime Museum of Tasmania and the ferry to the Museum of Old and New Art,
amongst many other attractions, and under the shadow of the imposing peak
of Mount Wellington. There will be an Indonesian textile exhibition in the
Plimsoll Gallery (within the venue) in addition to other cultural
activities. A variety of accommodation options are within walking distance
from the conference venue.
Getting There
Cheap airfares from other places in Australia to Hobart often available.
Airlines servicing Hobart include: Jetstar, Qantas, Tiger Air, and Virgin.
The venue is located 17 kilometres (a 20-minute taxi-ride) from Hobart
airport.
Those who would like to have a little adventure before attending the
conference can travel by ferry across Bass Strait. The Spirit of Tasmania
will take you from Melbourne to Devonport, and from there you can take bus
or other land transport to Hobart.
Redline and Tassielink coaches operate services from Devonport, Launceston
and other Tasmanian cities to Hobart.
Accommodation
Participants and speakers must arrange their own accommodation for the
duration of the conference. Hobart has a range of hotels, motels and budget
accommodation. It is best to stay in the City area and walk or catch public
transport to the venue. Information about accommodation (including
backpacker options) can be found at Hobart Travel Centre. You also can find
accommodation through other online services such as Hotel or Agoda.
In terms of distance and budget, the organising committee recommends the
following: Astor Private Hotel, Fountainside Hotel, Hotel Collins or The
Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel.
For a slightly more indulgent experience we recommend: Henry Jones Art
Hotel, Salamanca Inn or Somerset on the Pier .
Public Transport
If you are arriving by the Redline coach from other Tasmanian cities you
will arrive at its transit centre located in Liverpool Street. The
Tassielink Hobart's transit centre is located in Brisbane Street. The venue
in Hunter Street is within walking distance (allow 20 to 30 minutes) from
both transit centres. Some city buses also travel past the venue. For a

Metro Tas.
Parking
Paid parking is not expensive and is available around the venue.
